Nuer

Nuer is a West Nilotic language of South Sudan, spoken by millions of people within the country and a large community of expatriates and refugees elsewhere.

I started working on Nuer as a part of an undergraduate guided research seminar during the 3rd year of my degree, in 2022. During that seminar, I and a couple of other students conducted fieldwork via Zoom with a speaker of the Lou dialect living in Nairobi, Kenya. My seminar paper dealt with the syntax of agreement in Nuer (which I argued was not agreement, but a failure of pronominal arguments to undergo deletion and subsequent cliticization to the verb root).
