Ongan

The Ongan languages are one of two indigenous language families of the Andaman Islands, an island chain located in the Bay of Bengal that is today part of India.

I started working on Ongan languages in 2023, when during my research into the Great Andamanese languages I found that early attestations of the Ongan languages of South Andaman Island, which tended to all be termed "Jarawa" by British colonial authorities, did not match up with the phonological and morphological characteristics exhibited by the modern Jarawa language. This realization led to my current project on the Ongan languages, which is primarily aimed at internal classification of the family and incorporation of the linguistic evidence into archaeological models of Andamanese prehistory.
