There is disagreement over whether West Papuan refers to a legitimate genetic grouping of languages or a linguistic convergence zone. Either way, the West Papuan languages are spoken in the vicinity of the Bird's Head Peninsula and Halmahera Island in eastern Indonesia.
I started working on West Papuan languages in 2021, during the second year of my undergraduate degree. Currently, my main focus is the comparative reconstruction of the West Bird's Head languages, with a specific focus on Tehit and Moi as sources of data, as well as investigation into the abundant Austronesian loanwords present in this family.
